Healthy Homes

Pesticides are a quick and convenient way to get rid of cockroaches or ants in the cupboards, but chemical sprays and traps do not provide long-term protection. Following an Integrated Pest Management plan can eliminate pest attractions in your home like food, water, and shelter.

Here are 8 Steps to Follow:

  1. Identify your pest(s): Find out what pest(s) are sharing your home and about their eating habits, behaviors and ideal habitat
  2. Remove your pest’s food sources- for example, in the kitchen and dining room:
    • Wipe the kitchen counters after preparing food
    • Wipe the table after eating
    • Sweep the kitchen floor when crumbs get on the ground
    • Mop up food spills
    • Store food in airtight containers
    • Wash dirty dishes as soon as possible
    • Clean pet food bowls at the end of the day
    • Store compost and trash in sealed bins or containers
  3. Get rid of standing water by doing the following:
    • Replace or repair leaking pipes and faucets
    • Fix condensation problems by improving air circulation or ventilation
    • Repair roof leaks
    • Look for water damage in your attic, walls or floors and determine the source
  4. Make your home less inviting to pests by doing the following:
    • Sweep or vacuum underneath and behind furniture ( good hiding spots for pests)
    • Organize clutter, especially boxes and belongings in the attic or the back of closets
    • Repair areas with water damage
  5. Block your pest’s entryways by doing the following:
    • Seal cracks and crevices with caulk
    • Install mesh screens over large gaps on the exterior of your home
    • Fix window and door screens
    • Install door sweeps
  6. Keep your home clean and make needed repairs as soon as possible
  7. Monitor pest activity. It will help:
    • Stop a pest infestation from ballooning in size
    • Stop pest damage to your home
  8. Use pesticides, traps and bait stations if pest activity is not tolerable until infestation under control

Integrated Pest Management Advantages:

  • Reduces risk to people and pets
  • Infestations are less likely to occur
  • Minimal pollution
  • Saves money over time
  • Balanced ecosystems and protected biodiversity
