About the Wabasso Site

Wabasso Satellite Site

The Department of Health in Indian River (DOH-Indian River) became involved in Wabasso with our first Protocol for Assessing Community Excellence in Environmental Health (PACE-EH) project in 2004. Our work together and with Wabasso residents has achieved so many good things over the last 20 years such as new water systems, three phases of sewer, park improvements (fitness center, walking trail, court resurfacing, pavilions, etc.), paving roads, improving drainage, streetlights, sidewalks, building a house in a day, rehabbing over 20 homes, and demolishing abandoned homes among many other things.

DOH-Indian River returned to Wabasso with a second PACE-EH Project in 2021.

The resident identified the areas of need or concern listed below:

  • Senior & children’s services
  • Access to healthy foods
  • Unsafe housing and neighborhoods
  • Lack of transportation
  • Lack of continued educational opportunities
  • Low wages and lack of employment opportunities
  • Unsanitary living conditions

Our goal was to establish a health department site in Wabasso with services in each of the resident identified priority areas, meeting these needs either through the health department or through collaborative partnerships.
