Drinking Water Laboratory

Environmental Health

Have your private well water tested annually. It’s easy and inexpensive.

If you have a private well, the Florida Department of Health in Indian River County recommends that you test your water for bacteria at least once a year. Routine water testing is a simple and inexpensive measure you can take to ensure that your water supply is safe and to protect your family’s health. We have a National Environmental Laboratory Accredication Program (NELAP) certified microbiological water testing laboratory to analyze drinking water for bacteria contamination. We will provide you with collection containers and instructions on how to collect the water samples yourself. The sample(s) can then be tested onsite for a fee of $25.00 per sample. For an additional fee, department staff can come to your home and collect the samples for you. Our lab staff will explain your test results to you and advise you on measures you should take should the results show that your well or water system is contaminated.

While bacteria may be the most common threat to your drinking water, your well water may also be susceptible to other contaminants. Depending on past or present land use activities, additional water tests may be recommended. To ensure the results are valid, staff will provide easy access to local laboratories certified to perform the requested analyses.

Remember, private well owners are responsible for ensuring that their water is safe to drink.

For your convenience, please review the Sample Collection Instructions and complete the Drinking Water Bacteriological Sample form.
